‘Disability is not a word we use’: Social workers' professional judgements about support for disabled young people leaving care

Disabled young people leaving care often experience a more complex transition to adulthood than other youths. Still, policy and services can fail recognize the intersection between person's experiences disability. Drawing on data from qualitative interview study with 14 social workers who work aftercare in Norwegian child welfare services, we investigate workers' professional judgements about support for this subgroup of population. Our analysis uses theoretical construct institutional logics shows that did not include concepts disability their these people. Instead, considerations were guided by three organizing principles: ‘medical logic’, an ‘activation logic’ ‘aftercare logic’. We discuss findings light critical studies argue nuanced understanding practice leavers. Highlighting rights going beyond diagnosis categorisations disabled challenge medical model approach service provision.
